Umar Farooq was born in the district of Campbell Pure (Attock), Pakistan, in 1956. He received his MSc degree in applied
mathematics from the University of Karachi, Karachi, Pakistan, in 1978. He was awarded scholarship for the
Post Graduate Diploma in Numerical and Computing from the University of
Manchester, United Kingdom in 1992. He secured his PhD degree on his own resources in Finite Element Simulation of Impact-induced Damage and Failure in Fibrous Composite Mechanics from the University
of Bolton, Bolton, UK, in 2015.
In 1981, he joined Department of Mathematics,
Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. In 1986 he was promoted to Senior Lecturer's position. In January
1996, he was promoted to the position of Principal Lecturer. In 2001 he left the KRL Institute of Technology and moved to the United Kingdom.
In the United Kingdom, he taught Numeracy and Computing at Adult Learning Centres throughout his stay. During 2001-2003 along with the teaching assignments, he studied for teacher training courses from City Guilds of London and obtained Teaching Certificate 7307 and Educational Use of Information and Communication Technology. He also studied for Oxford-Cambridge (OCR) Diploma in Computer Programming (Visual Basic 6) and Diploma in Software Development and passed their examinations with distinction during 2004-5.
In 2005, he joined Hazara University, Mansehra, Pakistan and taught courses on Numerical Analysis, Applied Statistics, Computational Physics, and Research Methods for two semesters.
In 2006, he was enrolled for his PhD degree at the University of Bolton in the United Kingdom and successfully defended oral examination on 05 June 2014.
He joined COMSAT Institute of Information Technology, Attock, in Pakistan in October 2015 as a Visiting Professor and taught courses on Numerical Computations and Numerical Solution to Partial Differential Equations till September 2015.
He joined the University of Lahore, Sargodha Sub-Campus, on 1 October 2016 as a Professor. He teaches courses on Advanced Numerical Analysis, Numerical Solutions to Partial Differential Equations, Elastodynamics, and Applied Bio-statistics. Over a dozen students have completed their research works for MPhil degrees under his supervision. He also performs duties of Head of the Mathematics and Statistics Department along with teaching and supervisory assignments.
